The founder and creative director Birna Karen Einarsdottir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1972. After travelling the world, Birna Karen obtained her diploma in fashion design from the Copenhagen School of Fashion and Design in the year 2000.Birna Karen launched the company BIRNA Trading ApS in 2002, promoting her own brand - BIRNA.

In October 2005, BIRNA opened the first concept shop in Vesterbro in Copenhagen. In 2007, a new concept shop was opened in Reykjavik, and in March 2008, yet another concept shop was opened in the center of Copenhagen. In December 2008, BIRNA opened an online shop with exclusive pieces.
