The founder and creative director Birna Karen Einarsdottir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1972. After travelling the world, Birna Karen settled down in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she obtained her diploma in fashion design from the Copenhagen School of Fashion and Design in the year 2000.After working as a freelance designer within the industry, Birna Karen launched the company BIRNA Trading ApS in 2002, promoting her own brand - BIRNA.The company is based in the inspiring and pulsating surroundings of Vesterbro in the heart of Copenhagen, the home of the design studio, technical production, sales and showroom. And with strong roots planted in Iceland, frequent trips are made to the motherland where Birna Karen seeks inspiration for her collections.

In October 2005, BIRNA opened the first concept shop in Vesterbro in Copenhagen. In 2007, a new concept shop was opened in Reykjavik, and in March 2008, yet another concept shop was opened in the center of Copenhagen. In December 2008, BIRNA opened an online shop with exclusive pieces.BIRNA is available in selected shops in Scandinavia and in Europe and has been represented in the design shop at the prestigious Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
